Foursquare ITP conducted a microtransit feasibility analysis for Berkshire County and developed a roadmap for the implementation of a microtransit pilot program. Berkshire County is a large, mostly rural county, and, as a result, it is difficult to provide comprehensive and effective transit service for all residents and visitors. Public transportation is concentrated in the county’s more developed areas, including Pittsfield, Great Barrington, and North Adams, leaving much of the county unserved. As a result, many residents and visitors are reliant on personal vehicles.
Foursquare ITP analyzed current and future microtransit demand in the region to highlight where microtransit service could be most successful. Using our vehicle estimation tool, we provided Berkshire County Regional Planning Commission (BRPC) and other stakeholders with estimated costs and estimated microtransit demand across the county. We explored various approaches to microtransit service delivery and engaged with county organizations to understand what type of service will be most appropriate. We also engaged with the public to understand their preferences for microtransit service.
Foursquare ITP developed a microtransit pilot program for Berkshire County that is implementable and will improve accessibility across the county. As a result of our planning efforts, BRPC, in coordination with the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority, are applying for grants to implement a microtransit pilot program.
