Foursquare ITP developed bus service recommendations and public outreach materials to support an integrated transit network that works together with the Red Line to maximize mobility and accessibility in the region. The Maryland Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has been planning the Red Line, a transformative east-west light rail corridor, but integrating it with the existing bus network presents challenges. Service duplication, right-of-way constraints, and the need for smooth transfers needed to be addressed to ensure that the buses and light rail could work together efficiently. Additionally, tclearly communicating how the Red Line would fit into the streetscape and transit system was key for project advancement.
Foursquare ITP led the bus service planning effort by analyzing existing routes and identifying adjustments to optimize integration with the Red Line. We engaged closely with MDOT MTA’s Office of Service Development (OSD) to refine recommendations based on operational constraints and capacity considerations. Our team also developed a suite of detailed renderings and outreach boards to illustrate how the Red Line would interact with its surroundings, helping the public and stakeholders visualize the project’s impact.
These efforts are leading towards a well-coordinated transit network where buses and the Red Line work together, improving efficiency, accessibility, and rider experience. The outreach materials ensure that the public will be informed and engaged throughout the planning process.
Solutions and Outcomes
