Foursquare ITP has national expertise in bike share planning, with diverse experience in developing plans for large cities, suburban communities, and smaller metro-areas. We see bike share as part of a robust transit system, and as such we bring our expertise in transit to bikeshare planning. Our team has created tools to assist clients in understanding key factors such as user demand, ridership, program costs and revenue, and long-term maintenance costs.

Bikeshare Market Analytics

Foursquare ITP has created a series of GIS-based analysis techniques to understand geographically where bike share shows the most promise. Because bike share may serve different kinds of markets, our market analysis tools are customized to capture different factors such as overall ridership demand, revenue generating potential, or impact on public policy objectives. These tools can be used as part of a feasibility analysis for a community without bike share and as a tool to plan for expansion in an existing bike share program.

Example Application: Foursquare ITP utilized bike share market analytics to help the City of Boston develop a plan for expanding the Hubway bike share program. The analysis identified demand across various sub-markets of bike share users.

Bikeshare Financial Model

Foursquare ITP is a leader in the bike share financial and ridership forecasting. Through our years of experience with bike share, we have used data from a variety of systems to create financial and ridership forecasting tools that can be customized to the specific conditions of a particular bike share program. Our models are designed to be user friendly, and we work with our clients to create a tool that they can continue to use to estimate future costs across their system.

Example Applications: Foursquare ITP was responsible for the initial financial and ridership projections for the Philadelphia Bikeshare Program. Our work in estimating program costs and ridership allowed Philadelphia to move forward with establishing the Indego bike share program. Foursquare ITP provided the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) with its first long-range financial plan for Capital Bikeshare, helping the agency to define its long-term fundraising goals. The plan was instrumental in the agency obtaining dedicated funds from the city general fund for new bike share equipment and operating expenses.
