The Darby Transit Supportive Community Development Study reimagined the streets and public spaces around Darby Transit Center (DTC) to make the station more accessible and support future growth.
Although DTC sat within a walkable, prewar streetcar suburb, sidewalk and cycling gaps and unsafe postwar corridors like MacDade Boulevard limited how easily people could reach the station on foot or by bike.
Building on earlier work addressing DTC’s trolley operations, Foursquare ITP developed corridor redesigns and complete streets concepts—including pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, traffic calming, and transit prioritization—tailored to each corridor’s role in the network, illustrated through diagrams, sections, and site renderings.
SEPTA received a ground-up redesign of the station and its surroundings, from trolley circulation and platform concepts to street, intersection, and trail improvements and a proposed transit-oriented development.
The redesign served as a capstone of SEPTA’s trolley modernization program, presented at Philadelphia’s 2026 Transportation Camp and shared through a public concept walkthrough.
Solutions and Outcomes
- Analyzed existing conditions and multimodal accommodation around DTC.
- Produced 3D models and renderings of corridor improvement concepts.
- Led three rounds of public outreach to refine the redesign.
