Foursquare ITP aided the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) in developing the service concept for a new microtransit pilot service that would replace part of the existing LocalLink 75 (LL75). This route currently runs between Patapsco Light RailLink Station and Arundel Mills Mall via the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI) Airport. Due to the layout of the road network in the West Nursery and Stoney Run districts adjacent to BWI Airport, LL75 has a circuitous route in order to serve all the destinations and activity generators in the BWI Airport and Arundel Mills Mall areas. As a result, a one-way trip on LL75 is over 25 miles long and serves over 45 stops. Service is also infrequent, operating once per hour at most times of day. This area has a high transit potential for late-night transit, serving BWI airport, the BWI business district (with many distribution businesses), and the Maryland Live! casino. Our team evaluated current ridership trends on LL75 to determine potential microtransit zones and hours of service and explored two service scenarios and costs for a modified version of the existing fixed route LL75 to complement the microtransit service. Using the results of this analysis, MTA selected a preferred service scenario for the microtransit pilot.
